Gaborone, Botswana 04.06.2025 – The Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA) is proud to host a key ZaZiBoNA work-sharing meeting focused on Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections and regulatory collaboration. This significant gathering brings together inspectors from participating Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states to strengthen the medicines registration and approval process across the region.
The meeting is a vital component of the ZaZiBoNA initiative, which emphasizes harmonization and work-sharing among National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) in SADC to improve access to quality-assured medicines. As part of the regulatory approval of medicines, GMP site inspections are conducted by teams of inspectors from different member states and are reviewed collaboratively to assess compliance with international manufacturing standards.
During these work-sharing inspectors’ meetings, findings from site inspections of pharmaceutical manufacturers are presented, and active member states engage in structured scientific discussions to agree on the grading of observations. These meetings ensure consistency, transparency, and harmonized decision-making before finalizing inspection reports.
Manufacturers are given the opportunity to respond to inspection findings, with the forum also serving as a platform to evaluate the adequacy of proposed Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs). Inspectors collectively determine the acceptability of CAPAs and advise on appropriate follow-up actions.
A third core objective of the meeting is to determine the necessary regulatory oversight on inspected manufacturing sites. Inspectors apply a risk rating matrix to assess and recommend the frequency of future inspections based on the risk profile of each site.
BoMRA is honored to support this collaborative effort, which enhances regulatory capacity in the region through technical training sessions and robust scientific exchanges. These meetings not only strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of regulatory systems but also contribute to ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of medicines available to the public across SADC member countries.
